Posted on: 2021-06-09

Why GS E&C manufactures its own “Smart Home”

Posted on: 2021-02-24

Everything is becoming a vessel of technology and service. In technical terms, we refer to this as a 'Platform'. That's why Google and Apple are jumping into the automobile market, and Naver and Kakao are digging into home appliances. The same goes for the house. 'Smart Home' is emerging as a trend in the construction market. There is a consumer market demand to control home temperature and lighting conveniently, without pressing buttons, and to control home appliances such as refrigerators, washing machines, and vacuum cleaners. It's a reality that's already come to home owners and the construction industry, and construction companies are using smart homes as their strategy to differentiate apartments.

The recent trend of change in the smart home market is that construction companies are providing their own platforms. GS E&C is a representative domestic construction company that established its own smart home platform. In the past, "Home" was the territory of construction companies, and "Smart" was built by IT and electronics industries. MOUs related to smart home construction with telecommunication companies, Samsung Electronics, LG Electronics, Naver, Kakao, etc. have become popular. The same was true of GS E&C. GS E&C signed a smart home MOU based on Kakao's artificial intelligence (AI) platform 'Kakao I' in August 2017. However, in November 2019, GS E&C announced that it had completed the construction of the 'Zai AI platform' with its subsidiary Zai S&D. The Zai AI platform will be applied to about 100,000 households by 2021. Why did GS E&C decide to make its own smart home?

Growing Smart Home Market and Concerns Over Platform Dependency

First, it’s important to note that the size of the smart home market is growing every year. According to market research firm Statista, the global smart home market is expected to grow from $77.3 billion in 2020 to $175.7 billion in 2025. In particular, as the online culture is shifting due to COVID19, and telecommuting is spreading, smart home supply is expected to accelerate along with changes to traditional residential spaces. This trend is visible at the world's largest international consumer electronics and IT exhibition 'CES2021'. Samsung Electronics, LG Electronics, and more introduced home appliances and technologies that build smart home environments such as robot vacuum cleaners and home robots.

The market is growing, but the construction companies that have led the housing market have not changed, and are simply doing construction works. It's like building an apartment as before and installing AI speakers and communication facilities of IT from electronics companies. [SM1] Today, the smart home is linked to home appliances with Internet of Things (IoT) function. However, with this approach, it can only be a half-way solution for smart home. Simply controlling IoT devices with voice commands or smartphones is all this makes possible, and is far from the smart home concept that actively manages the home based on data. However, if the AI platform that oversees the entire system is entrusted to IT and electronics companies, the leadership of smart homes will be completely transferred.[SM2]

If you draw an ecosystem that extends beyond smart homes to smart cities, concerns about platform dependency become more serious. In the current smart city project, the construction company is just a traditional constructor. Currently, the selection of private businesses, the national pilot city defines the qualification of representatives of those with expertise in smart service construction and operation, so construction companies are only participating in limited scope.

Conceptual diagram of GS E&C's Smart Home System 'Zai AI Platform' (Source = GS E&C)

The Zai AI platform developed by GS E&C can be understood as an extension of the competition for smart home leadership. The Zai AI platform focuses on collecting and analyzing residential environment data and providing customized services for each generation. When you go out, you turn off the lights, call the elevator, and have the robot vacuum cleaner according to the resident's lifestyle. It is also linked to energy management by optimizing indoor air quality and adjusting the temperature  room by room, by room. Anomaly or facility failure can also be detected by big data. From a long-term perspective, the Xi AI platform can be viewed as a willingness of the construction company to take the data initiative needed to implement a complete smart home.

An official of GS E&C said, "We originally planned to install Kakao speakers at three sites, but we have established an AI platform to respond to the rapidly changing market environment and various needs of our customers. The partnership with Kakao is ongoing and we will collaborate from various angles."

Unstable construction market and smart home brand strategies

Behind the smart home is an unstable and fierce competition in the construction market. Construction is an industry that is greatly affected by economic fluctuations. The growth of the existing construction-oriented construction industry has slowed down, and the growth of construction companies last year was reversed due to the real estate regulations and the COVID-19 situation coupled together. GS Engineering & Construction was also evaluated to have made a good defense under unfavorable conditions, but the decline was inevitable. Last year's sales and operating profit fell 2.82% and 2.2% year-on-year to KRW 10.1229 trillion and KRW 750.4 billion, respectively. The positive factor is that the operating profit ratio is 7.41%, which has remained high in the industry.

As the construction industry is uncertain and the competition for new apartments in the premium apartment market is intensifying, smart homes are emerging as a brand differentiation strategy. The brand will soon be linked to the reality facing the construction company "Purchase Order". The higher the brand competitiveness and preference, the more likely it is to be selected as a contractor, and the price of the apartment depends on the brand preference. The high price of the name value leads to competitiveness in winning orders again. Premium apartment brands also have a big impact on the value of construction companies. If smart homes are an inevitable challenge for construction companies amid the digitalization of the home from a long-term perspective, smart homes are a survival strategy for differentiating apartment brands from a short-term perspective.

Also, smart homes can be a new business for construction companies whose growth is stagnant. We can expand well-branded smart home solutions into profitable businesses that sell not only to our brands, but also to third parties. In addition to its parent company, Zai S&D, a subsidiary of GS Engineering & Construction, is also conducting home improvement business such as smart home systems, ventilation air purifier production and sales, and facility maintenance for Seoul Transportation Corporation, Hyosung Heavy Industries, and others. The business scale increased from 128.8 billion won in 2018 to 157 billion won in 2019. Based on accumulated standards in the third quarter of last year, it is expected to continue to grow to KRW 112.8 billion. A GS Construction official said, "We are considering whether we can be a business model for the external sales plan of the Zai AI platform."

What are the limitations of the construction company's own smart home platform?

The problem facing construction company smart home platforms is the limitations of compatibility, development personnel, and investment costs. The key to smart home service is compatibility. The amount of  IoT devices that work together determines the success or failure of the service. There is a shell [SM1] called a smart home (platform), because it is less useful if the smart home appliances and services that actually work are limited. Fortunately, GS E&C's Zai AI platform is linked to major domestic voice engines such as Naver Clova, Kakao I, SK Telecom Nou, KT GiGA Genie, LG Chloe, and Amazon Alexa and can be used regardless of telecommunication company. GS E&C explained, "We have established a system based on OCF, an international standard, to enable all device connections."

Research and development personnel and investment costs are relatively insufficient compared to other players entering the smart home business. A total of 17 people in the research and development organizations of JS&D develop the smart home system platform. Among them, there are ten developers related to smart homes. The ratio of R&D expenses to sales is 0.69% (total R&D expenses of 1.99 billion won) as of 2019. In terms of GS E&C as a whole, the R&D cost compared to sales is only 0.49% as of 2019.

The approach to smart homes varies from industry to industry. An IT industry official said, "We are carrying out B2B (Intercompany Transaction) business to expand our platform, and the partnership of construction companies such as smart homes is only one of them. We are continuing to increase the number of affiliates."

IT companies are approaching the smart home market based on user data, and looking to electronics companies to expand their smart home appliance sales, and construction companies to secure competitiveness in apartment brands. In the coming smart home era, who will be the final winner? The struggle for leadership over smart homes is just beginning. (© Bloter&Media Inc. All rights reserved.)

Posted on: 2021-06-09

Posted on: 2021-06-09

'OCF' standard in the spotlight as the key solution for compatibility in smart home

Posted on: 2020-10-16

LH selects OCF as its own platform for IoT communication standard.

There are high expectations for Smart Home platforms and Private Construction Companies to adopt it. The Smart Home Association in Korea is focusing on how to spread smart home solutions adoption by holding public events such as hackathons.

OCF (Open Connectivity Foundation) is in the spotlight as a solution to solve compatibility and universality problems among IoT devices, one of the biggest issues facing smart homes today. The OCF organization was established in July 2014 under the leadership of Samsung and Intel to spread IoT standards and open source solutions. In November 2015, UPnP joined OCF and, in 2016, Microsoft and Qualcomm, key members of the All Seen Alliance, merged with OCF to become the current structure and organization of OCF. OCF aims to develop data models that capture IoT devices in various IoT domains (smart homes, healthcare, smart agriculture, etc.) and connection technologies that support interconnection and interworking of various IoT devices on based on IP. IoT specifications are standardized by Device-to-Device (D2D), Device-to-Cloud (D2C),, and Cloud-to-Cloud (C2C) technologies for interworking between products and services.

   · D2D is a service directly connected to controllers and IoT devices
   · D2C is a service that connects IoT devices to a cloud with a controller attached to it
   · C2C is a service connecting clouds

OCF is regarded as an IoT standard that guarantees logical interoperability between objects, where current domestic smart home solutions are limited in terms of interoperability across industries, as solutions are divided among construction companies and telecommunications companies. This is why LH decided to build its IoT platform based on OCF for its Smart Home solution.

"There is uncertainty when a proprietary solution is used. OCF is a national standard and avoids such uncertainty offering a reliable long-term solution." said John Park, Executive Director of OCF. In-line with the current industry trend, the Smart Home Industry Association is also a holding public competition to discover new and creative OCF-based smart home services. The competition, which will continue until November 30, is open to anyone who is interested in smart homes (ages 14 or older). The theme of the contest is a scenario for future services in smart homes. Specifically:

   · Energy-saving scenario
   · Social problem-solving scenarios (fine dust reduction, elderly people living alone, improvement of residents' convenience, how to deal with spread of infectious diseases, etc.)

   · AI convergence idea
   · Smart home convergence scenario

TheSmart Home Association has said that service scenarios shall be based on factual standards such as OCF.

Posted on: 2021-06-09

LH to build Smart Home Platform with domestic companies by September next year

Intensive discussion with Smart Home Technology Development Advisory on efforts to secure IoT interoperability; Applying it in Long-term rental housing first starting from the second half of the year and expanding it to 22 thousand and 8 hundred units by 2024.

Written by reporter Yoon Jung-il: July 20, 2020 (Monday) 11:45 Post: July 20, 2020 (Monday) 11:48

LH (President Byun Chang-heum) will build a smart home platform by September 2021 that will become the foundation of smart home services, along with domestic telecommunication companies, home appliance companies and home network companies. Once the platform is established, apartment residents will be able to control smart home devices freely, no matter what telecommunication company, home appliance, or product they use. LH is expediting establishment of a "Smart Home Technology Development Consultative Body" including construction companies, three telecommunication companies, home appliance companies, home network companies, and the Smart Home Industry Association, and is increasing the development speed with the aim of completing an integrated platform for smart home appliances by September 2021.

This platform combines voice recognition, AI and big data with the latest ICT (Information and Communication Technology), using OCF (Open Connectivity Foundation), an international IoT communications standard, allowing residents to control smart home devices, independent of their choice of mobile operator or home appliances. Until now, Smart Home platforms have been developed proprietarily within each company, limiting consumers' options and hindering market expansion.

This has served as a substantial block to the distribution and activation of smart homes in terms of consumers, industries, and infrastructure, and the need to build an open platform that guarantees the interoperability of all players has been strongly raised.

LH plans to form a 'Smart Home Technology Development Consultative Body' to solve such problems, develop an open smart home platform applicable for public housing, and adopt it to long-term rental housing plans from the second half of this year to 228,000 households by 2024.

In this regard, LH has provided smart home pilot services (8 types) to more than 5,000 households and eight districts including Siheung Eungye A-2 Block since 2018.

Smart Home pilot services include IoT smart hub, gas control, door open/close detection, temperature and humidity sensing, fine dust and CO2 sensing, heating, lighting control, and energy metering. So far, LH has provided this service using its own communication standards.

With a new smart home platform, LH will provide additional services such as:

   · Consumer-oriented AI elements
   · Residential-life related big data
   · Healthcare services
   · Digital donations in addition to the existing eight types of services

LH said, "We will provide customized health information such as health, living and weather, and provide expert counseling with the assistance of health centers to help those who need health care. In addition, we are developing various extended services such as accumulating digital-donation-points [SM1] in our daily lives."

"LH operates a consultative body involving construction companies, telecommunications companies and home appliances to develop the smart home industry," said Han Hak-kyu, head of LH's Public Housing and Electricity Department. "We will make efforts to further develop related services."

Reorganization of Smart Home Technology Development Consultative Body

Posted on: 2020-07-13

Abolition of Vice-Chairperson, establishment of Vice-Chairperson, appointment of Lim Hyo-seop, Choi Sang-man, etc.;
Formation of working-level consultation TF for applying Smart Home OCF standards, first meeting Chairman Han Hak-kyu said, "We will work together to find the best solution."

Reporter Yoon Jung-il wrote: July 12, 2020 (Sun) 19:26 Post: July 12, 2020 (Sun) 19:31

The Smart Home Technology Development Council, led by LH, has renewed its organization to develop technology necessary for construction and IT convergence and establish an integrated platform for connecting smart home appliances.

The Smart Home Technology Development Council (Han Hak-kyu, Director of LH) held the first steering committee of 2020 at LH headquarters in Gangnam, Seoul on the 10th [SM1] and unanimously voted on the reorganization of the council's structure. The consultative body abolished the Vice-Chairman position and established the new Vice-Councilor for the efficient and practical operation of the organization. As a result, the new Vice Councilor will be Lim Hyo-seop, one of the Chairmen of the General Construction & Electrical Council, and Choi Sang-man, head of the Smart Home Industry Association. In addition, it will form a "working-level consultation TF for promoting the Smart Home OCF standard in the industry" and abolish three existing divisions, including an eco-friendly energy division.

OCF (Open Connectivity Foundation) is an industry-led global standard organization that sets standards for interworking (communication) between IoT products and services and was launched in October 2016 by home appliance manufacturers Samsung Electronics, LG Electronics, Haier, and Electrolux to provide IoT-based smart home standard platforms. There are 488 global member companies around the world, including home appliance makers  Qualcomm, Intel, Cisco, Canon and Microsoft. OCF standardizes interworking between D2D (Device-to-Device), D2C (Device-to-Cloud) and C2C (Cloud-to-Cloud) and supports all traditional standards such as oneM2M and Zigbee in the IoT field. The South Korean government is also actively considering endorsement of OCF as a solution to solve closed-platform issues to jump-start the smart home industry.

Therefore, the Smart Home Technology Development Council held its first meeting of "Working-level Consultation TF for utilizing OCF Standards" with major stakeholders including LH, OCF Korea, three telecommunications companies, Home Network and the Smart Home Industry Association. Han Hak-kyu, chairman of the Smart Home Technology Development Council, said, "LH is actively seeking to expand smart homes in public housing to respond to the government's digital green policy and adapt to the rapidly changing construction market trend."

Posted on: 2021-06-09

LH is preparing a platform that integrates and controls Smart Home devices regardless of home appliance manufacturers or telecommunication businesses. "We are planning to set up an integrated cloud for Smart Home on behalf of construction companies and start a pilot project," a LH official said on the first. "Smart Home standards are a problem that can be resolved if existing home appliances, telecommunication companies and construction companies agree on which standard to adopt."

A unified platform that can control all Smart Home devices in one environment is a key issue in Smart Home industry.

Until now, telecommunication companies, home appliance companies, and construction companies that distribute and manufacture smart home devices have their own platforms, so if they want to control other devices, they have to install separate application(s).

As a result, Google, Amazon and Apple, which boast their high global market share,  joined together last year to declare development of standards for smart home technologies. However, the "integration" method that LH is considering is different.

If Google, Amazon, and Apple make a specification using "ZigBee," a type of wireless communication method, LH is considering OCF-based cloud.

Open Connectivity Foundation (OCF) is an IoT alliance in which more than 450 companies around the world as members, and Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics are prominent members in Korea. Their goal is to establish international standards for IoT and interconnected devices and clouds, regardless of vendor. In January, the commercialization of OCF international standards was officially announced at CES 2020, and large domestic companies and the Ministry of Science and ICT, showed great interest.

It has been determined that LH's focus is on cloud communication methods rather than Device-to-Device communication methods, due to realistic limitations.

This is because it is virtually impossible for one side to accept the other as telecommunication operators and home appliance giants, which are leading smart homes, develop and operate their own communication methods, AI  and platforms. In addition, it is observed that companies are considering Cloud-to-Cloud communications to control smart home devices.

"We are thinking of a structure that connects cloud and cloud, not devices," said a representative for LH. "If cloud servers interact, it will be possible to control devices that are connected to clouds."

LH is planning to start a pilot project as early as this month.

"We are planning to form a technical consultative body with related institutions in order to establish a flexible integrated platform." said a representative for LH.

Posted on: 2021-06-09

Unifying Smart Home: Is it feasible?

Posted on: 2020-06-11

Lee Kun-han, a reporter, uploaded at 09:57 May 2020.

[Techworld, Reporter Lee Kun-han] The Internet of Things (IoT) is making many changes in everyday life. The concept of smart home is no longer unfamiliar to us. Unlike old home appliances that needed manual operation, Smart Home appliances are convenient these days because they can be controlled from a distance with just one app or a spoken word. Home appliances combined with artificial intelligence (AI) can also implement customized operations that analyze users' daily patterns.

However, there is still a problem in this convenience. While more and more smart home appliances are being introduced to consumers’ homes, the platforms applied to them are still different.

Platform War

Currently, the Smart Home is using different platforms to control product communications, unless they are from the same brand/vendor. Samsung and LG Electronics, which are key players in the smart home appliance market, are  operating their own platforms called SmartThings and ThinQ, while Google and Amazon are also entering the smart home market based on AI virtual assistant platforms such as Google Assistant and Alexa.

However, if the Internet of Things platform specification for smart home appliances control is unified into one, similar to USB-C Type in Smart Phone, wouldn't it be possible to implement a smart home that can be customized according to user preference, regardless of brand? In conclusion, it is not impossible, but difficult.

The need for standardization of IoT has been steadily raised. In general, most users' priorities are practicality and rationality in purchasing products, unless they are loyal to a particular brand. For example, if a company A makes astrictive TVs and a company B makes prettier and more cost-effective products, it is a more common choice to make individual purchases accordingly.

In order to realize what companies call "a pleasant smart home that moves in unison according to user orders," cooperation between each smart home appliance manufacturer is essential.

Movements related to IoT standardization

Companies are also well aware of the need for IoT technology and platform standardization. There have been many meaningful attempts so far. Open Connectivity Foundation (OCF) and Connected Home Over IP Project (CHIP) are representative examples, especially OCF, which was established in February 2016 and has been developing technologies for IoT standardization.

In fact, OCF achieved tangible results at CES 2020, which was held in January this year, as the world's first IoT international standard announcement. The emergence of CHIP, a Google, Apple and Amazon-led smart home standard development coalition launched in December 2019, also surprised the industry with the assessment that it was "sleeping with enemies".

The goals of these standardization groups are consistent: creating a common IoT platform shared by all companies. This is certainly what consumers want. In addition, standardization of platforms is a necessary step for small and medium-sized businesses that are losing their brand competitiveness to smoothly enter the smart home market.

CHIP Partners (Source: CHIP)

Consensus on Ideas, but Calculating Gains and Losses in Reality

Based on the market needs, people may think a large-scale IoT platform integration will take place soon. However, that is likely to be much later. This is due to the gap between ideals and reality based on interests between companies. Everyone agrees with the importance of IoT standardization, but at the same time, behind the scenes, there is fierce competition to secure leadership in this market.

An official from a major company who spoke to a reporter said, "The idea that all companies are pulling out of the platform competition for consumers is itself unrealistic." Even if it is standardized,  everyone wants to focus on their own platform.

So far, the reason why each company has been developing its own platform for smart homes is that there were no clear standards, but at the same time, there are also aims to become a standard. IoT is a land of opportunity that no one has yet dominated for sure, such as the mobile industry which has been led by Android and iOS. Naturally, companies do not want to easily lose or share the initiative in this area.

In addition, standardization of platforms may not be pleasant for companies that had earlier implemented strategies to create loyal users to their brands. This is because such companies have to endure losses in their differentiated solution to a certain degree due to standardization.

Standardization, its own platform; One needs both.

OCF announced significant IoT standards and tested convergence between several brands. However, it will be difficult to see all  these brands integrated in a short period of time. Rather, it is likely that joint development of standardized platforms and strengthening of its own platforms will lead to a two-track strategy for the time being.

In addition, in the current transition period, the alliance and collaboration of key players is also sporadic. The move has been in full swing since 2017. Samsung joined hands with Kakao in September of that year to sign a partnership between its AI platform 'Bixby' and Kakao's AI platform 'Kakao i'.

Through this cooperation at that time, it was possible to directly control home appliances such as Samsung refrigerators, washing machines and air conditioners through KakaoTalk messages or Kakao Mini voice commands. Through Bixby, there is a way to call Kakao's delivery service.

Samsung made this choice to expand its base for home appliances through cooperation with Kakao, which has the entire nation as a customer. Kakao, on the other hand, was interested in expanding its application through Samsung's proven home appliances.

LG Electronics and Naver also announced massive cooperation in November 2017. This cooperation was very similar to Samsung-Kakao. This made it  possible to connect home appliances through Clova by linking an LG Smart Speaker with Naver's voice recognition AI platform called Clova.

LG Electronics is more active in external cooperation, earlier announcing open strategies such as open platforms and open connectivity and has strengthened its cooperation structure with foreign companies such as Google and Amazon. Up close, the formation of CHIP between Google, Apple, and Amazon can also be seen as part of the merger between key businesses in the market.

Companies eventually weigh practical gains.

While these platform choices can slow down the integration of industry platforms, they are positive that each platform's core functions and concepts are all different, and that they can produce better results if each other complements them.

From the perspective of companies, it would be a more practical judgment in that a partial fit will strengthen their platform influence and gradually expand it to standardized areas, rather than sudden integration in terms of providing differentiated user experience (UX).

After all, the complete integration of smart home platforms may be a long way off. However, we cannot ignore consumer inconvenience. Therefore, our consorted efforts through standardization organizations will continue to go on. Wouldn't it be possible to create an environment where the basic interworking and control, regardless of the brand, as we have seen in TV remote control?

Posted on: 2021-06-09

Homework for Korean companies seeing through CES

Joo Young-seop, chair professor at Korea University (former head of the Small and Medium Business Administration)

As the world enters an era of ultra-uncertainty and chaos, it is busy preparing prospects and countermeasures.. At the beginning of the year, 180,000 people attended CES 2020, the world's largest technology exhibition in Las Vegas, USA, Held by 4,500 participating companies from 161 countries, CES 2020 drew world-wide attention to see the latest technology trends of the new decade. CES 2020 predicts the direction of future technological innovations and establishes responsive strategies, while also addressing many implications and challenges to Korean companies.

As stated by CES' organizer CTA (Consumer Technology Association), the topic of "CES 2020" is the full-fledged opening of "Data Age." It has been suggested that the Internet of Things, a source of data, will evolve into object intelligence, combined with 5G communication and artificial intelligence (AI).

As a link between the physical world and the cyber world, the Internet of Things will open an era of object intelligence by combining 5G technology that realizes ultra-fast, ultra-low latency and ultra-connectivity, with AI technology that processes big data. The Intelligence of Things will be the core of all companies' business models in the future, which will make it a core competency that all companies must secure.

390 Korean small and large businesses and startups participating in CES 2020 have achieved significant results in enhancing the status of Korea's technology, with innovative solutions and products in all areas such as smart home, smart mobility, and smart city.

From the perspective of traditional product-oriented business models, Korean companies seem to be leading the industry with world-class displays, semiconductors, smartphones, and intelligent home appliance technologies, but unfortunately, they have already lost their industrial leadership to global platform companies.

U.S. platform companies such as Google, Amazon, and Apple are virtually evaluating smartphone-based mobile digital platforms, as well as AI secretarial platforms that are contact points with consumers, and solidifying their status as global platforms by securing AI technologies, clouds, and unrivaled data. Leading data platforms are viewed as much more important than product businesses such as smartphones and AI speakers.

The future vision presented by CES, such as smart home, smart mobility, and smart city, leads to the question of who secures data as a data-based business model - and global platform companies are expanding their dominant position in the data-based business model.

At CES 2020, Google and Amazon also showed off their partnership with Google Assistant, represented by Hey Google, which is based on Amazon Alexa, rather than displaying their own technologies and solutions. In other words, not Google, Amazon, and Apple themselves, but each company is trying to secure leadership by expanding its cooperative ecosystem.

It is urgent for Korean companies to develop countermeasures against this. The key is to expand and evolve the current product-oriented business model into a data-based digital platform-oriented business model. Samsung and LG are also releasing Bixby and ThinkQ in the AI secretarial field, which has great strategic importance as consumer contacts[SM1] , respectively, but competition is not easy as the market is already centered on global platform companies.

In this situation, Neon, an artificial human-led by Samsung Research America, is planned as one of our countermeasures. Providing a new user experience through neon's video and voice-based solutions is likely to reshape existing AI secretarial market leadership based on voice recognition.

Standardization of OCF (Open Connectivity Foundation), led by Samsung and LG, can also contribute to evolving the dominance of these leading companies. It is necessary to respond to the age of data based on object intelligence with these diverse technology and business model innovations. We look forward to the innovation of our companies in 2020.

Posted on: 2021-06-09

[CES 2020] IoT Open Standards, Revealed at CES

Posted on: 2020-06-11

Shim Jae-seok | January 9, 2020

One of the important topics of CES, the world's largest IT event, is smart homes. Most electronic device manufacturers offer a future in which all devices in their homes are connected over the Internet and controlled through AI. Not only electronic devices, but also non-electronic objects such as mirrors, desks, sinks, and beds can often be seen at CES.

For such  imagination to become a reality, all devices must be connected to show value. If they are not connected and each exists independently, users will be confused having to control many devices separately. If Google, Amazon, Samsung Electronics, LG Electronics, Apple, and other manufacturers that want to grab the smart home market all make their own proprietary technologies and are unable to connect to each other, they will become ‘Chaos Home’, not Smart Home. It is impossible to manage and control each individual IoT device in the home, which can include tens or hundreds.

To solve this problem, global leaders have worked to form the Open Connectivity Foundation (OCF) to create a single Internet of Things standard. This is because IoT devices must be able to communicate with each other regardless of manufacturer, operating system, or chipset. OCF is a standard that has been led by South Korean companies such as Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics.

OCF 2.1 was officially announced at CES 2020. In particular, several beta-version products with this standard were announced at CES 2020. BSC Computer, COMMAX, SURE Universal, Haier, LG Electronics, Resideo, Samsung Electronics, and others introduced OCF 2.1 compatible devices such as TVs, robot vacuum cleaners, tablets, and air conditioners.

In particular, OCF 2.1 features a new OCF Universal Cloud Interface (OCF UCI), an interface standard with the cloud.

OCF UCI is an API that can be used by various manufacturers to standardize connections between 'cloud servers' and connections between devices and clouds. It is time-consuming and expensive for each company to develop custom APIs one by one. If there are no standards, some companies are likely to monopolize APIs, so it also plays a role in preventing them.

Lee Hyo-gun, vice president of Samsung Electronics' video display division, said, "We expect the OCF Universal Cloud Interface to solve fragmentation problems in current IoT markets and establish an integrated IoT ecosystem."

"OCF UCI can simplify cooperation between manufacturers that lack the skillset to develop and support cloud apps," said John Park, executive director of OCF. "If manufacturers implement OCF UCI APIs, they can easily produce devices that connect to cloud applications."

<Byeon Woo-min, CEO of COMAX (second from left), Kim Byung-hoon, senior vice president of LG Electronics (four from left), and Lee Hyo-gun, executive vice president of Samsung Electronics (third from right) attended the meeting. Reporter Lee Young-ho younghotiger@etnews.com>

[CES 2020] (Exclusive) Commercialization of IoT International Standard: Samsung/LG-led Global IoT Alliance, Open Connectivity Foundation, in Full Swing

Posted on: 2020-06-11

International standards for Internet of Things (IoT) devices have been commercialized, marking a significant milestone for the IoT as it is the first case in the world. Global home appliance manufacturers such as Samsung Electronics, LG Electronics, Haier, and Electrolux are the main players. Starting this year, a path has been opened to build a smart home that combines various home appliances, regardless of the brand.

The Open Connectivity Foundation (OCF) officially announced on the 6th (local time) the commercialization of OCF-based products at Barrymore Restaurant in Las Vegas. Along with the commercial announcements, OCF also held a demonstration event in which global home appliances showcased interoperability among devices.

Many high-ranking officials from global home appliance companies attended the event, including: Lee Hyo-gun, Executive Vice President of Samsung Electronics, Chun Kang-wook, Executive Vice President of Samsung Electronics and Chairman of OCF Korea Forum, Kim Byung-hoon, Senior Vice President of LG Electronics, Byun Woo-suk, CEO of COMMAX, Li Yaun, General Manager of Haier, Victor Ariel, CEO of SURE Universal, Dennis Fairfield, Head of Marketing, BSC Computer Marketing, and Scott Harkins, Head of Marketing at Resideo.

OCF is an IoT standard organization in which more than450 companies from around the world are joined as members. Its goal is to interconnect devices and clouds regardless of brands. Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics are among the key member companies. In addition, many small and medium-sized companies and university research institutes in Korea are members, as the influence of Korea on IoT international standards is significant.

This is the first time that products based on IoT standards have been commercialized. For commercialization, global manufacturers have verified technology via conformance testing on Device-to-Device connection (D2D) as well as Cloud-to-Cloud (C2C) connection for three to four years. With this technology, Samsung Electronics' IoT platform, SmartThings, and LG Electronics' Smart ThinQ can now be connected. It is noteworthy that both companies, which had been in conflict over TV issues, have formed an IoT alliance. It is predicted that South Korea's leading home appliance makers will cooperate to create new business models, and global home appliance manufacturers are planning to actively release products that are based on international IoT standards.

Samsung Electronics' Vice President Lee Hyo-gun said that "Samsung Electronics has been validating third-party devices and cloud connections and will continue to do so in the future,” adding that “OCF will be integrated into SmartThings this year.”

"It is important to provide customers with a better life beyond developing quality products," said Kim Byung-hoon, senior vice president of LG Electronics. "Consumers will have a better smart home experience by integrating IoT standards."

The introduction of IoT international standards is a big opportunity for small and medium-sized South Korean businesses. Byun Woo-seok, CEO of COMMAX, commented that "Small and medium-sized companies will be able to see a halo effect of Samsung Electronics/LG Electronics' services based on IoT interworking". "The domestic electronics industry ecosystem will solidify," he said, adding that it is also a great advantage not to go through separate standards work whenever products enter overseas markets.

The government also showed interest in endorsing IoT international standards, which are led by domestic industries. Before the press conference, multiple senior government officials held a closed-door meeting with OCF domestic home appliances. The meeting was attended by Jang Seok-young, Vice Minister of Science, Technology, Information and Communication, Lee Seung-won, Information and Communication Industry Policy Officer, and Lee Jung-dong, Special Economic and Scientific Advisor of Blue House. They discussed directions for South Korea's Smart City and ways to expand international standards.

It is predicted that businesses will come up with profitable models for services that they have never had before through IoT standards.

John Park, OCF Executive Director, said that cooperation of global companies in IoT has become reality. "A new chapter has opened in the global electronics industry, and detailed discussions by companies for IoT services will begin from now on."

Posted on: 2021-06-09

Intelligent Power Network Essential Technology; Effectiveness such as efficient power management and reduced operating costs

Conceptual diagram of 'e-IoT platform

[Energy Daily Reporter Song Byung-hoon] The "e-IoT platform" developed by the Korea Electric Power Corporation (CEO Kim Jong-gap), has been certified by OneM2M (one Machine to Machine), Lightweight Machine to Machine (LwM2M), and Open Connectivity Foundation (OCF), three international standards related to the Internet of Things.

According to the Korea Electric Power Research Institute, the e-IoT platform is a piece of equipment that collects, analyzes, and processes IoT sensor data installed in power facilities such as transformers. Intelligent power networks can be implemented by incorporating IoT technology into power grids, and real-time analysis and condition prediction of power grids can be made by applying machine learning and big data technologies.

The e-IoT platform can reduce the costs of power grid operation and maintenance by detecting the power flow of power lines and the status of power facilities with a high risk of failure through sensors, and repairing or replacing power facilities before abnormalities occur.

In addition, it can be used as a standard technology for the operation of smart homes, smart cities, and smart factories by monitoring, analyzing, and remotely controlling the operating data of various facilities using electricity in real-time.

The certified e-IoT platform is being used to establish an e-IoT test certification system in the smart energy sector, which was launched by the Korea Information and Communication Technology Association (TTA) in September 2019.

The e-IoT test and certification system is used to verify the reliability and compatibility of IoT products and was developed by the Korea Information and Communication Technology Association to develop test standards and certification standards and provide technical standards.

KEPCO is using the Korea Electric Power Research Institute’s e-IoT platform technology for remote monitoring such as air disturbances for steel towers and real-time measurement of wind direction and wind speed. KEPCO is also promoting the commercialization of water supply monitoring services for apartment complexes nationwide.

It is also contributing to the creation of an IoT ecosystem by transferring its technology to create SW clusters for new energy industries in the city of Gwangju and Jeonnam, expanding the application to other industries.

An official from the Korea Electric Power Research Institute said, "The e-IoT platform technology is the foundation of intelligent power network construction projects. In the future, intelligent power networks will enable efficient power management at home and in the factory and reduce operating costs."

Digicert "Korea's IoT Security in the initial stage; PKI Platform to support it"

Posted on: 2020-06-11

Reporter Choi Eun-jung, article written on 2019.10.23 17:12

| Approximately 28 billion IoT contact points protected, etc.

"Digicert is a Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) platform that protects about 28 billion Internet of Things (IoT) connection points" It is going to support South Korea's IoT security based on security standards developed by business partnerships."

Mike Nelson, vice president of IoT security, said in a meeting held at Oakwood Premier Hotel in Gangnam, Seoul on the 23rd, "We need to prepare for this as vulnerabilities are being found in various IoT devices."

The PKI platform is a service that allows companies to quickly issue, renew, and discard digital certificates needed to operate applications such as authentication, encryption, and digital signature.

It provides management and data protection functions such as Smart devices, industrial sensors, manufacturing systems and medical equipment. In other words, it guarantees data safety through authentication and encryption between devices connected in any form such as servers, mobile devices, applications, and devices. For example, security certificates can be inserted in advance during the chip manufacturing process to support security without changing the production process.

"As the number of IoT devices continues to increase, it is important to find partners with security with scalability," Nelson said with confidence. "Digicert has a variety of portfolios."

In particular, it also emphasized that Korean companies should pay more attention to IoT security.

"I think Korea's IoT security is still in the early stage," Nelson said. "Unlike large manufacturers, small manufacturers have little security-related movement, which can vary depending on how much executives and management teams value it."

"We recently met with several manufacturers in South Korea and showed our willingness to support security," he said. "We will establish security standards in the automotive and medical sectors and create various cases of collaboration."

It is crucial for both governments and various industries such as regulators, manufacturers and security companies, to create security standards together.

One example of a collaboration is between the National Institute of Standards and Technology on drug injection pumps. The pump, which is used in hospitals, is connected to a wireless network, which is also connected to pump servers and other pumps. They also created a system that can safely move data to digital authentication platforms.

CableLabs also incorporated digital PKI into its smart TV set-top box to protect its contents. The move is aimed at preventing content broadcast on TV from being leaked to the outside world.

Digicert also prepared standards on global IoT security with OCF (Open Connectivity Foundation). Korea Manufacturing Corporation is also a member of OCF and Digicert contributed to the areas of consumer electronics such as smart watches.

Posted on: 2021-06-09

Posted on: 2021-06-09

OCF to release IoTivity Lite 2.0 next month: Targeting small to medium size companies

Posted on: 2019-09-26

Issued date: September 25, 2019

Reporter Lee Young-ho younghotiger@etnews.com

Open Connectivity Foundation's "IoTivity Lite 2.0" will be released next month. It is predicted that small and medium-sized businesses and small (IoT) device manufacturers will be able to greatly reduce the development costs of OCF-compatible products. OCF aims to drastically expand its ecosystem by lowering thresholds for development.

IoTivity Lite 2.0 is a source code for software development. By utilizing source code, manufacturers can implement IoT functions that are compatible with OCF. OCF is distributing open-source products to connect each brand's products and to encourage anyone to develop OCF devices freely.

OCF is going to introduce a light version to actively attract small and medium-sized businesses and start-ups to OCF ecosystems. "IoTivity Lite simplifies source code so that small and medium-sized businesses and startups can easily develop OCF functions with a low-end spec. We are planning to distribute a 15-minute development guide as well." said a representative for OCF.

When IoTivity Lite is released, OCF open-source will be dualized into "IoTivity Classic" and “IoTivity Lite.” Developers can choose to use Lite or Classic depending on circumstances. The IoTivity Classic supports more features and has a larger source code and has a relatively complicated development process compared to IoTivity Lite. High-end modules were required for IoTivity Classic, and small companies with less resources specifically requested cost-effective solutions.

The release of IoTivity Lite is expected to signal more active participation in OCF from domestic companies. In fact, it is predicted that multiple mid-sized home appliance manufacturers are considering OCF products using IoTivity Lite.

"With current IoTivity source code, there was a lot of burden on development." said a representative for an industry. "It was more suitable for large appliances such as TVs and refrigerators, rather than small products," he said. "If the light version is released, the burden on manufacturers' development will be greatly reduced. There will be a significant increase in the number of manufacturers that will participate in OCF."

Posted on: 2021-06-09

Ahn Kyoung-ae, Reporter, Digital Times Input: 2019-07-16 12:00

IoT guidelines have been released to help administrative agencies plan, build, and use IoT (Internet of Things) with ease.

On the 16th, the Ministry of Public Administration and Security announced that it will prepare guidelines for introducing IoT and release them on its homepage.

The guidelines include the concept of government IoT, trends in standard technology, standards for the introduction of networks and devices, methods for calculating capacity, quality management, and security compliance. Specifically, various IoT network models such as self-network construction and commercial network utilization are presented, and IoT services are classified according to their characteristics to guide the planners.

The guidelines suggested that when subscribing to IoT wireless networks such as LoRa, NB-IoT, and LTE-M provided by telecommunication operators, they should be consider coverage, device suitability, security and fees. It is required to build its own network if it is more economical and feasible rather than using commercial networks and adopt open architectures that meet standards such as OneM2M and OCF. It also decided to apply step-by-step security measures such as design, development, distribution, installation, operation and disposal. It also proposes a method of utilizing the "government's common IoT foundation" that can connect each IoT network that is developed by each institution.

Ministry of the Interior and Safety has developed guidelines since last year after listening to opinions from Internet of Things associations, industries and experts.

"With the advent of 5G and intelligent government, the use of IoT technology will increase," said Park Sang-hee, an information-based protection policy official at the Ministry of the Interior and Safety. "We hope the guidelines will be of practical help to those who are not familiar with the technology."
